Mehbooba expresses concern over harassment of Hindu women in Bangladesh

Date:

People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday expressed concern over reports from Bangladesh alleging that Hindu women fear moving freely while wearing sindoor, calling the situation deeply disturbing.

In a post on X, Mehbooba said while the issue deserved serious attention, the Indian leadership appeared to face a moral dilemma in raising the matter with Bangladeshi authorities.

“Reports from Bangladesh alleging that Hindu women fear moving freely while wearing sindoor are deeply disturbing,” she said on X.

“Sadly, the Indian leadership appears to face a moral dilemma in raising this grave issue with Bangladeshi authorities, as lumpen elements at home are themselves seen forcibly pulling off the hijabs of Muslim women. In a world dominated by fanatics, who will truly stand up for the rights and dignity of women” she added.

Earlier, the Jammu and Kashmir unit of the BJP on Tuesday slammed the National Conference (NC) and the PDP over their alleged silence on killings of minorities in Bangladesh.

In a statement BJP J&K spokesperson, Manzoor Bhat questioned the conspicuous silence of J&K leaders, including Omar Abdullah.

“It is deeply disheartening to see that those who claim to be the champions of human rights and ‘bhaichara’ (brotherhood) in Jammu & Kashmir are today tight-lipped. When any minor incident occurs in India leaders like Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti are the first to tweet and lecture the nation on secularism. But today, when our Hindu brothers and sisters are being dragged out and murdered in Bangladesh, where is their conscience Why has their ‘Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb’ gone into hiding” Bhat said.
