A delegation of the INDIA alliance met the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Friday regarding various electoral issues, including ‘delay in publishing voter turnout data and the Prime Minister’s repeated violation of the Model Code of Conduct’.
Briefing the media after meeting the ECI at the Nirvachan Sadan here, senior Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi said, “There should not be a delay in publishing the voter turnout data. There cannot and should not be an 11-day delay in publishing voter percentage, but what is more worrying is the increase in voter percentage”.
Stating that the alliance had made this complaint a long time ago, Singhvi said, “Unfortunately, the Election Commission has uploaded its reply just a little while before our meeting today.”.
“We have made several complaints against the Prime Minister and the Home Minister, and with just three weeks left for the Lok Sabha election to get over, no action has been taken against them. The ECI has sent notices to the party president but not to the offenders. We were not even told what the response was or what action was being taken,” the Supreme Court lawyer said.
It may also be mentioned that earlier in the day, party general secretary Jairam Ramesh termed the ECI’s response to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s letter as’simply beyond description’.
In the letter, Ramesh said that Kharge had raised perfectly legitimate issues on which there have been widespread concern and comment.
