Gambhir keeps Sydney Test inclusion of Rohit under wraps

Date:

India Head Coach Gautam Gambhir, filling in for Captain Rohit Sharma, took to the media ahead of the final Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), with the press conference dominated by lingering uncertainty over Rohit’s participation and ongoing questions about his form.

When asked about the matter, Gambhir stated that the final XI would be decided after assessing the pitch conditions. “We are going to have a look at the wicket and finalise it tomorrow,” he told reporters on Thursday.

When asked again about Rohit’s inclusion in the Sydney Test, Gambhir reiterated, “As I mentioned earlier, we will assess the wicket and announce the playing XI tomorrow. My answer remains the same.”

Rohit’s absence from the pre-match press conference raised questions, as his participation was expected. His recent form has raised concerns, with the opening batsman managing only 31 runs at an average of 6.20 since his return in the second Test. This, along with speculation about his possible retirement from Test cricket, has fueled doubts about his future in the format.

India’s hopes of qualifying for the World Test Championship (WTC) Final rest on their performance in the Sydney Test, with a win critical to keeping their slim chances alive.

Gambhir also confirmed that pacer Akash Deep will “miss the Sydney Test due to a back injury,” though a replacement has not yet been announced. Despite ongoing doubts about his fitness, Rohit participated in India’s pre-match nets session, adding further uncertainty to his readiness for the Test.

With India’s future in the WTC and the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on the line, the final team selection remains a topic of intense focus. Gambhir’s press conference left many questions unanswered, and the final lineup will be revealed closer to the match, with all eyes on the SCG for the crucial decider.
