Jairam Ramesh calls out PM Modi for skipping Kuala Lumpur Summit, says move to dodge Trump

Date:

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of deliberately avoiding the upcoming Kuala Lumpur Summit to avoid a face-to-face encounter with US President Donald Trump.

Ramesh took to the social media platform X today to address the swirling speculation around Modi’s attendance.

“For days, the big question has been—will he or won’t he go? Now it seems clear that the PM won’t be there. That’s a missed chance for countless photo ops and to showcase himself as the ‘Vishwaguru,’” Ramesh said pointedly.

According to the Congress leader, the reason behind Modi’s no-show is straightforward. “He simply doesn’t want to be cornered by President Trump, who will also be attending. Remember, he skipped the Gaza peace summit in Egypt just weeks ago for the very same reason,” Ramesh added.

Ramesh drew a sharp contrast, saying, “It’s easy enough to post glowing messages praising President Trump online. But physically mingling with a leader who has boasted 53 times about stopping Operation Sindoor and claimed multiple times that India promised to halt Russian oil imports? That’s a different ballgame – too risky for him.”

Adding a bit of Bollywood spice, Ramesh quipped, “The PM might well be humming that old Bollywood hit: ‘Bachke re rehna re baba, bachke rehna re,’ signaling caution in the air.”

The Kuala Lumpur Summit, a major diplomatic gathering featuring global leaders, had been anticipated as a platform for significant international engagement. Modi’s decision to skip it marks a noteworthy absence. Confirming his plans, the Prime Minister announced he will participate only virtually in the ASEAN summit, underscoring his physical absence from Kuala Lumpur.
